In a foreword to the book, Mafi says that she wanted to write to give a voice to “Muslim American teenagers in a world where they’re seldom given a chance to speak” and I think Shirin does that. The story very much hangs on Shirin as a character and Mafi gives her a great first person voice, which instantly makes it easy to relate to her. The behaviour displayed towards Shirin is sadly believable and although I think some of the supporting characters are thinly drawn, the passion between the central characters carries you through such that I’d definitely check out Mafi’s other work. Tahereh Mafi’s historical YA romance combines fierce anger with a steamy, intense relationship and is based on her experiences of being a Muslim teenager wearing hijab in post 9/11 America. Ocean seems to be genuinely interested in her and while he asks the same stupid questions that other people have asked, he also seems to learn from his mistakes and Shirin is terrified to realise that she wants to get to know him too … As a result, she tries to stay under the radar, listening to her music through ear buds hidden beneath her head scarf, practicing break dancing with her brother and his friends while refusing to engage with her peers and just waiting out the next two and a half years until she can leave.Īnd then Shirin meets Ocean James – a white boy with whom she is paired in her biology class. Her parents emigrated the America for a better life and work hard, constantly moving around as they get better jobs and move to nicer neighbourhoods in different cities, which means that Navid and Shirin are constantly changing schools. Navid finds this easy – tall, athletic and good looking, he always makes friends and quickly integrates into school life.įor Shirin, however, things are different because she wears hijab – a head scarf – and in post 9/11 America, which has already invaded Afghanistan and stands ready to invade Iraq, anything that marks you out as a practicing Muslim – especially a female Muslim – is to invite abuse (at worst) and hurtful microaggressions (at best). 16-year-old Shirin has just started at a new high school with her older brother Navid. I earn commission on any purchases made through these links. You can order A VERY LARGE EXPANSE OF SEA by Tahereh Mafi from Amazon USA, Amazon UK, Waterstone’s or UK. He’s not like everyone else – but Shirin has had her guard up against the world for so long that she’s not sure she’ll ever be able to let it down … He’s the first person in forever who really seems to want to get to know her – and it terrifies her. She hides away, drowning her frustrations in music, and spending her afternoons break-dancing with her brother. Shirin is never surprised by how horrible people can be. It’s a difficult time, but especially so for a sixteen-year-old Muslim girl who wears hijab. It’s the year after 9/11, and Shirin has just started at yet another new high school. When you’re hiding from a world that hates you, who would make you risk everything to be seen again?

In this work, a liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) method has been developed to produce liquid PCs via simple mixing and liquid phase separation at room temperature. It is important to note that the desired compound (usually an organic molecule) can in theory be in either phase. However, its controllable synthesis is a big challenge, because it is very difficult to keep all the particles well-dispersed in a highly concentrated colloidal system, and then assemble them into colloidal crystals. Liquid-liquid extraction (we will refer to it simply as extraction from now on) is typically conducted with one aqueous phase (either pure water, or an aqueous solution) and one organic phase. The liquid colloidal photonic crystal (PC) is a new kind of photonic structure with attractive properties, such as fluidity, structural metastability, and reversibility in colloidal assembly. 1/2/2024 0 Comments Jacquemus dress gigi hadid“Being at shows and shoots and just being in the city again being around friends becoming a mom, with everyone also coming out of COVID-I have an appreciation for both sides of it. “Having a daughter, although it shifted my life to make me really want to feel more settled, has also really made me appreciate the chaos as well,” she said. If you reckon you're up to the task, though, once it's installed you'll have extra protection on all your devices. While it's absolutely possible to set the VPN up on your router, without any dedicated software it's a much more involved process – so much so that many users choose to purchase a pre-installed router. However, what's missing is a dedicated router app like ExpressVPN's, and this is what's holding Nord back. Again, although it sounds complex, it's not, so don't be afraid of giving it a go. If you want to set it up directly on your device, NordVPN provides a simple and effective Smart DNS guide for Apple TV, which will allow you to expand your viewing. Thankfully, in our NordVPN review it delivered, too. However, if any issues do arise, Express's live chat support is second to none, and it also offers a 30-day money-back guarantee so if it doesn't perform as expected, you won't be out of pocket.Īs possibly the best-known VPN on the scene, NordVPN is likely to be most people's first choice as a VPN for Apple TV. Some streaming sites, Netflix especially, have upped their VPN blocking game in the last year or so, but Express can still reliably unblock tons of different libraries. It's not as generous as some, but it should be enough. With a reasonable five connections permitted simultaneously, you can protect your iPhone, PC, and even more devices as well. However, just because your main use for your VPN might be on your Apple TV, that doesn't mean you can't protect your other devices. That means you'll have comprehensive written guides to follow, and if anything doesn't go as planned, the live chat support is second to none. Thankfully, while it's not as hard as it sounds, ExpressVPN also boasts some of the best customer support in the business. That might not sound like much, but if you want all of the good stuff an Apple TV VPN can offer, not just the freedom to stream extra content, you'll need to install it on your router.įor most, though, MediaStreamer will be plenty – and even setting up Smart DNS on your Apple TV sounds complicated enough. Its Smart DNS feature (known as MediaStreamer) is quick and easy to get going, and it's one of the few VPNs on the market that has a dedicated router app. No matter how you want to access extra content on your Apple TV, ExpressVPN delivers. Before that, though, we'll run down the very best Apple TV VPN services available right now – all of which either support Smart DNS and routers, or at least one option. Our top choice for an Apple TV VPN is ExpressVPN, and we'll briefly outline how to set up an Apple TV VPN at the end of this guide – click here to jump down. While getting this all set up can prove complicated, we recommending following our in-depth guide on how to setup a virtual router, which in our opinion is much easier than installing a VPN directly on your router. This means your device will get the addition of an encrypted internet location and the ability to relocate your IP before it reaches your Apple TV. The reference of a figure is fig:label where label is the corresponding label of the chunk that generated the figure. For figures, you must provide a correctly formatted (according to the targetted output format) string in the fig.cap= argument of the chunk on a single line. Figures and tables must be generated from R chunks and their labels are equivalent to the R chunk labels 1. The numbered items can be cross-referenced by using with label being fig. With ‘bookdown’ the figures, tables and equations are numbered and captioned if fig.caption: yes is set in the YAML header. This is not something easy for a beginner. However, users have to fiddle a little bit with the YAML header to use these formats, and the nice configuration box for the document that can be used in RStudio is not available any more. There is a series of other formats in ‘bookdown’ as well, including for R Notebooks. The bookdown::html_document2, bookdown::pdf_document2, bookdown::word_document2 formats activate the same extension for, respectively single-page HTML, PDF and Word outputs from standard R Markdown. The ‘bookdown’ package provides a solution that works for books. With their memories now fully restored, the group descends into a cavern beneath the sewers, with Mike providing a rock from the Losers' fight with the Bowers Gang, and they perform the ritual in the remains of the meteor that brought It to Earth. The Losers then rejoin Bill (who just failed to save a young boy named Dean from being eaten by It) at the Neibolt House, and convince him not to face It alone. Bowers viciously attacks Eddie at the Losers' hotel, before attacking Mike at the library Henry nearly kills Mike, but Richie impales him before he has the chance. Twenty-seven years after It’s initial defeat, Pennywise returns to Derry, Maine, in 2016. Despite this, it was a box office success, grossing over $473 million worldwide against its $79 million production budget. The film received mixed reviews from critics, who praised its performances (particularly that of Skarsgård and Hader), production design, and themes, but criticized its runtime, pacing, and scares, which were unfavorably compared with its predecessor's. I wonder if there was an emotional narrative you were trying to construct in the organization of the songs. Megan: That theatricality sort of speaks to an indulgence in emotions, and there doesn’t seem to be any one feeling you lean into across the record. Writing about them allows me to understand them and feel them.” I’m a little bit beguiled by them, and shut off. “I think that often, events in my life are just kind of things that are going on around me. There’s a kind of musical theater element to it that I really enjoy, even though I’m not a classical musical theater fan. There are all these notes in between-microtonal notes-and a lot of my favorite artists play on them. Grian: I think that was really just inspired by the fact that I’m a very limited singer. Megan: Does that serve a role in your vocal delivery-maybe the sort of hybrid talk-singing is an effort to find that space between song and poem? I’m kind of just writing all the time, and deciding afterward if it’s poetry, or if it’s music. Where they go after that is not as important to me. I don’t really consider the application of the words that I’m writing-other than the fact that it serves as a function to myself, and to my own experience of life. But inwardly, I like to keep the differences as blurred as possible. Grian Chatten: I think, outwardly, the differences are just the musical elements. I wonder, for you, where the differences between the two lie, and where you find overlap between them? Megan Hullander: It seems that songwriting can be poetry, but not every song is necessarily a poem in its own right. On the whole, it’s evidence of his uncertainty, an attempt to make meaning of the indefinable in-betweens.Īhead of the June 30 release of the record, Chatten joins Document to dissect the album’s anatomy and offer an analysis of the mercurial emotions that made it. The song is an illustration of unease, and choosing to end on it blackens Chatten’s ink of intention: Chaos For The Fly isn’t any sort of definitive statement-it asks more questions than it answers. The record’s final track, “Season For Pain,” maybe best embodies that tempestuousness: moving from delicate and watery guitars to strange, gray intervals taking on both full-bodied singing in earnest and fuzzy recordings of spoken word oscillating between the explicit and the metaphoric, between low and sweet notes rendering those themes of back-and-forth explicit in its lyrics (“The shore was good while it ran my friend / ’Til it was running away / That was the season for loving / This is the season for pain”). Each track is an act of indulgence, immortalizing the perceived permanence of a passing moment. Its songs are underpinned by disparate states of being, which is really the point of it all: They’re connected by their confusion-emblematic of psychological peaks that feel never-ending, before they drop into equally pseudo-inescapable emotional ravines. Written (in part) in the immediate aftermath of Fontaines D.C.’s Skinty Fia, the debut solo effort sees the Dublin-born artist in flux. Chaos For The Fly is a picture of irresolution. Grian Chatten hasn’t said so, but his album’s title and emotionally-tumultuous lyrics imply that the fly is an apt stand-in for his current state of being. The road to something new is usually more akin to repeatedly smacking into a pane of glass before finding a window than it is to the soft, well-nurtured unfolding of a flower in bloom. It can require the fly’s ugly persistence, its circuitous path, its violent efforts. The fly is less romantic than its symbolic sisters-the butterfly, the phoenix, the leaves, the flowers, and so on-but change is habitually unromantic. But it also represents transformation and metamorphosis and change (whereby death and decay are instrumental stones for stepping). The fly is most often understood as an emblem of death, of decay. Ahead of the release his latest album, Grian Chatten joins Document to dissect its anatomy and offer an analysis of the mercurial emotions that made it In conclusion, carbon nanotubes hold immense potential for revolutionizing the automotive industry, offering benefits such as lightweight construction, improved electrical conductivity, and enhanced thermal management. As a result, it is crucial for researchers and industry stakeholders to work together to address these concerns and ensure the safe and responsible use of CNTs in automotive applications. While their small size and unique properties offer numerous advantages, they also raise concerns about their potential toxicity and environmental persistence. However, ongoing research and development efforts are focused on finding more cost-effective methods of CNT production, which could eventually make them more accessible for the automotive industry.Īnother challenge is the need for further research to understand the potential environmental and health impacts of carbon nanotubes. One of the primary concerns is the high cost of producing CNTs, which currently limits their use in mass-produced vehicles. Furthermore, their high electrical conductivity and flexibility make them ideal for use in flexible displays and touchscreens, which are becoming increasingly popular in modern vehicles.ĭespite the immense potential of carbon nanotubes in revolutionizing the automotive industry, there are still some challenges that need to be addressed before their widespread adoption. For example, CNT-based sensors can be used to monitor tire pressure, detect vehicle collisions, and measure various environmental parameters, such as temperature and humidity. Their unique properties also make them suitable for use in sensors and electronic devices. The potential applications of carbon nanotubes in the automotive industry extend beyond structural components and thermal management. By incorporating CNTs into these systems, automakers can enhance the efficiency of heat dissipation, leading to improved vehicle performance and reduced wear and tear on components. Carbon nanotubes have excellent thermal conductivity, making them ideal for use in heat sinks and other thermal management components. Efficient heat dissipation is crucial to ensure optimal performance and prevent overheating. Vehicles, especially those with internal combustion engines, generate a significant amount of heat during operation. Thermal management is another area where carbon nanotubes can make a significant impact in the automotive industry. Moreover, their high electrical conductivity can also improve the performance of batteries and capacitors, enabling faster charging and longer driving ranges for EVs. For instance, CNTs can be used to create lightweight wiring and cables, which can help reduce the overall weight of an electric vehicle. This property makes them suitable for use in electric vehicles (EVs), where efficient power distribution is critical. In addition to their impressive strength-to-weight ratio, carbon nanotubes also exhibit excellent electrical conductivity. By incorporating CNTs into these components, automakers can significantly reduce vehicle weight, leading to improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions. This makes them an attractive option for replacing traditional materials like steel and aluminum in various vehicle components, such as body panels, chassis, and suspension systems. In fact, they are about 100 times stronger than steel and six times lighter. Carbon nanotubes have the potential to address this issue, as they are incredibly strong and lightweight. One of the key challenges faced by the automotive industry is reducing vehicle weight to improve fuel efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. These microscopic tubes, made of carbon atoms arranged in a cylindrical nanostructure, possess exceptional mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties, making them ideal for a wide range of applications in the automotive sector. One of the most promising materials that could revolutionize the industry is carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The automotive industry is on the cusp of a major transformation, driven by the need for more efficient, lightweight, and sustainable vehicles. Exploring the Potential of Carbon Nanotubes in Revolutionizing the Automotive Industry 1/1/2024 0 Comments Him lights out lyricsLike the waters of the river, like the motorists on the highway, and like the yellow trains streaking down the Santa Fe tracks, drama, in the shape of exceptional happenings, had never stopped there. Until one morning in mid-November of 1959, few Americans-in fact, few Kansans-had ever heard of Holcomb. The farm ranchers in Finney County, of which Holcomb is a part, have done well money has been made not from farming alone but also from the exploitation of plentiful natural-gas resources, and its acquisition is reflected in the new school, the comfortable interiors of the farmhouses, the steep and swollen grain elevators. However, the last seven years have been years of droughtless beneficence. Farming is always a chancy business, but in western Kansas its practitioners consider themselves “born gamblers,” for they must contend with an extremely shallow precipitation (the annual average is eighteen inches) and anguishing irrigation problems. They raise cattle and sheep, grow wheat, milo, grass seed, and sugar beets. Farm ranchers, most of them, they are outdoor folk of very varied stock-German, Irish, Norwegian, Mexican, Japanese. Unless you include, as one must, the Holcomb School, a good-looking establishment, which reveals a circumstance that the appearance of the community otherwise camouflages: that the parents who send their children to this modern and ably staffed “consolidated” school-the grades go from kindergarten through senior high, and a fleet of buses transports the students, of which there are usually around three hundred and sixty, from as far as sixteen miles away-are, in general, prosperous people. (Holcomb, like all the rest of Kansas, is “dry.”)Īnd that, really, is all. Hartman, the proprietress, dispenses sandwiches, coffee, soft drinks, and 3.2 beer. Up on the highway, there are two filling stations, one of which doubles as a meagrely supplied grocery store, while the other does extra duty as a café-Hartman’s Café, where Mrs. No passenger trains do-only an occasional freight. The depot itself, with its peeling sulphur-colored paint, is equally melancholy the Chief, the Super-Chief, the El Capitan go by every day, but these celebrated expresses never pause there. But the majority of Holcomb’s homes are one-story frame affairs, with front porches.ĭown by the depot, the postmistress, a gaunt woman who wears a rawhide jacket and denims and cowboy boots, presides over a falling-apart post office. It is one of the town’s two “apartment houses,” the second being a ramshackle mansion known, because a good part of the local school’s faculty lives there, as the Teacherage. Nearby is another building with an irrelevant sign, this one in flaking gold on a dirty window-“ holcomb bank.” The bank failed in 1933, and its former counting rooms have been converted into apartments. At one end of the town stands a stark old stucco structure, the roof of which supports an electric sign-“ dance”-but the dancing has ceased and the advertisement has been dark for several years. After rain, or when snowfalls thaw, the streets, unnamed, unshaded, unpaved, turn from the thickest dust into the direst mud. Not that there is much to see-simply an aimless congregation of buildings divided in the center by the main-line tracks of the Santa Fe Railway, a haphazard hamlet bounded on the south by a brown stretch of the Arkansas (pronounced “Ar-kan-sas”) River, on the north by a highway, Route 50, and on the east and west by prairie lands and wheat fields. Holcomb, too, can be seen from great distances. The land is flat, and the views are awesomely extensive horses, herds of cattle, a white cluster of grain elevators rising as gracefully as Greek temples are visible long before a traveller reaches them. The local accent is barbed with a prairie twang, a ranch-hand nasalness, and the men, many of them, wear narrow frontier trousers, Stetsons, and high-heeled boots with pointed toes. The village of Holcomb stands on the high wheat plains of western Kansas, a lonesome area that other Kansans call “out there.” Some seventy miles east of the Colorado border, the countryside, with its hard blue skies and desert-clear air, has an atmosphere that is rather more Far West than Middle West.
